About Smart Home Triage
Smart Home Triage was built after one too many "just factory reset it" support threads that fixed nothing. Most smart home problems trace back to a handful of causes — a dropped router lease, a 2.4GHz/5GHz mismatch, a weak battery — and diagnosing the right one first saves you from resetting a device that was never broken.
How the diagnoses are built
Each result is drawn from documented, publicly known failure patterns for consumer smart home hardware: how Wi-Fi DHCP leases expire, how Zigbee and Z-Wave mesh networks route around weak nodes, how manufacturers split local versus cloud control, and how battery voltage affects radio reliability. The tool matches your device type and symptom against these patterns and returns the most likely cause along with one concrete next step.
What this tool is not
It doesn't connect to your devices, your Wi-Fi, or any manufacturer's cloud service. It doesn't replace an electrician for wiring issues, and it isn't affiliated with any device manufacturer. It's a starting point for troubleshooting — not a diagnosis you should treat as final if a device involves safety-critical wiring or security.
Who's behind it
Smart Home Triage is maintained as an independent, ad-supported reference site. If you spot a diagnosis that's off, or a device category we're missing, reach out.
