Motion, door, and leak sensors are built to run for months or years on a single battery, and that design goal — extreme power efficiency — is the root cause of almost every sensor quirk owners notice.

Why sensors behave the way they do

To stretch battery life, sensors sleep between reports and transmit only when triggered or on a long check-in interval. That makes them harder to diagnose in real time than a constantly-connected device, since a sensor that looks unresponsive may simply be asleep, not broken.

Common causes, explained

False motion or leak alerts

As battery voltage drops, some sensors' detection circuits become less stable and can misfire before the app ever shows a low-battery warning — this is the single most common cause of false alerts.

Alerts arrive several minutes late

Battery-powered sensors often batch readings or check in on a fixed interval rather than transmitting instantly, trading real-time reporting for battery life. A short delay is frequently by design, not a fault.

A door or window sensor stops reporting after months of reliable use

Magnetic reed sensors can drift out of alignment as door hinges settle over time, widening the gap beyond the sensor's detection range even though the sensor itself is undamaged.

A sensor near HVAC equipment triggers repeatedly

Vibration from a furnace, air handler, or nearby appliance can trigger motion or vibration-based sensors even without any real activity in the room.
