A smart lock is a security device first and a smart home device second — which means its failures need a calmer, more deliberate troubleshooting approach than a bulb or plug.

Why smart locks behave the way they do

Locks run on battery power almost exclusively, and they're built to fail toward security rather than convenience: when a lock loses confidence in its connection or its battery level, it favors staying locked and unresponsive over risking an unintended unlock. That design choice explains most of the frustrating symptoms owners see.

Common causes, explained

Pairing works over Bluetooth first, Wi-Fi second

Most locks pair to your phone over Bluetooth before handing control to a hub or Wi-Fi bridge for remote access. If Bluetooth is off, or your phone is more than a room away, initial setup will time out even though the lock itself is fine.

Battery drain accelerates near end of life

Locks draw a large burst of current to move the deadbolt motor. As batteries age, they can still power the lock's radio for standby but fail under that motor draw, causing an unlock request to time out or fail intermittently before a low-battery warning ever appears.

Auto-lock and auto-unlock fight each other

Geofencing-based auto-unlock and a short auto-lock timer can create a loop where the lock re-locks moments after unlocking because your phone is still detected as 'arriving' rather than 'arrived.'

Metal door frames and security plates reflect signal

A lock's radio has to transmit through or around metal hardware in the door and frame. On doors with reinforced strike plates, this can cause a weaker, less reliable connection than the same lock would get on a standard wood door.
