A smart thermostat is the one device on this list that's also part of your home's electrical system, so its failures split cleanly between HVAC wiring issues and ordinary connectivity problems.

Why thermostats behave the way they do

Most smart thermostats need a small but continuous power draw to run their screen and radio, which older HVAC systems don't always provide without a dedicated common wire (the 'C-wire'). Diagnosing a thermostat means figuring out early whether you're dealing with a power delivery problem or a network one, since the fixes don't overlap.

Common causes, explained

Screen dims or the thermostat reboots randomly

Without a C-wire, some thermostats "steal" small amounts of power through the system's other wires, which can cause a brief brownout and reboot when the HVAC system's compressor or fan kicks on.

Temperature reads incorrectly

Thermostats mounted near a sunny window, a heating vent, or an exterior wall pick up localized temperature swings that don't represent the room as a whole, leading to a system that seems to overshoot or undershoot the set temperature.

Schedule changes don't take effect on time

Cloud-synced schedules occasionally drift out of sync with the thermostat's local clock, especially after a daylight saving time change or extended offline period, causing a schedule to fire at the wrong time until it resyncs.

App shows a different temperature than the thermostat's screen

This almost always means the thermostat's last cloud sync happened before its most recent manual adjustment — a local change hasn't yet propagated to the app.
